All We Knew

*I posted this once before and took it down. It needed a little work.*

there was a place
there was a time
there was a moment
a hue of red
and a shade of blue

days were short
and nights were long
skies sprinkled with stars
but none shot across
the midnight canvas
when eve descended
on hopeful hearts
praying for streaks of light
in darkened skies

there was a place
there was a time
there was a point
where shore and tide
met and merged
rushed in the collide
as instants of sorrow
drowned in currents of joy

or perhaps

moments of joy
fled in waves of sorrow

it's hard to remember
which came first
and which came most

it's hard to remember
how we're still standing
and why we're still here

after clouds gathered
and thunder echoed,
lightning bolted
and storms assailed,

it's hard to remember
how cracks in foundations
can ever be sealed

there was a place
there was a time
there was an instant
when minds converged
and eyes united
spirits rejoiced
and souls connected

but hesitation flooded
walls and chambers
of fragile hearts
so easily scared

chests heaved heavy

we laughed with hope
yet breathed in pain

there was a place
there was a time
there was a juncture
where hues of red
met shades of blue,
when love was lost
and fragile hearts
found themselves
in the shatter

there was a place
there was a time
there was a window

but fear was all we knew.
